Empowering Educators: Lingnan University Instructors Earn Avid Certified Instructor Certification
We recently had the opportunity to deliver Pro Tools Avid Certified Instructor (ACI) training to the instructors at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Founded in 1888, Lingnan is one of Hong Kong’s oldest universities and is well known for its focus on small-class teaching and close interaction between students and staff. Its Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries (DACI) gives students hands-on experience in film, animation, and digital media, helping them build practical skills for creative careers.
The instructors were already highly skilled and knowledgeable, but they wanted to take their audio workflows to the next level and turned to Maru for support. Before the training, we assessed their existing experience and tailored the sessions to help them deepen their understanding of Pro Tools and refine their techniques. It was a pleasure working with such a dedicated and talented group, and by the end, they had all earned their official Avid Certified Instructor certifications — a result we’re really proud of.
We sat down with Rex Wong to get his thoughts on Pro Tools Certified training with Maru.
Could you tell us a little about your main role at Lingnan University?

My main role at Lingnan University involves managing media, AV, and IT equipment and labs, as well as the visual and audio recording studios
I also purchase audio recording systems for campus projects and teach students how to use media software such as Pro Tools, providing guidance when they operate the audio recording studio.
What challenges were you facing in your work that led you to seek Pro Tools Specialist Certification training?
I wanted to become a certified Pro Tools instructor to offer official courses that help students gain industry-recognized qualifications. I also wanted to deepen my understanding of Pro Tools’ advanced features to enhance my workflow and productivity, particularly in music production and audio editing.
By earning this certification, I hoped to strengthen my technical skills and provide higher-quality training and support to both students and colleagues.
Can you share a specific breakthrough moment during the training when a complex concept or technique suddenly made sense?
During the training, I had several breakthrough moments, but the most significant was understanding Elastic Audio. It’s an incredibly powerful tool that allows for flexible time and pitch adjustments for various kinds of tracks. Learning how to use Elastic Audio effectively has really improved my music production process. It’s made editing and recording much more efficient for me. This has transformed the way I approach audio editing in Pro Tools. It’s saved me time and allows me to focus more on creativity.
What can you do now that you couldn’t do before the training?
Before the training, I wasn’t very familiar with MIDI editing or Elastic Audio techniques in Pro Tools. Now, I have a much stronger understanding and feel far more confident using them.
I also find it easier to explain Pro Tools functions and workflows to my students in a clearer and more accessible way.
What parts of your workflow have been improved after taking this training?
After this training, I feel my overall efficiency has improved. As I mentioned, I can now handle MIDI editing and Elastic Audio far more confidently, cutting down the time I spend on music production. I’ve also gained an overall deeper understanding of Pro Tools, which helps me troubleshoot and solve technical issues more easily. Overall, the training has really boosted my productivity and technical skills, letting me deliver better results more consistently.
Who do you think would benefit most from this training?
This training is great for audio professionals at any level — from beginners to experienced users — especially since Pro Tools keeps adding new features. It’s also really useful for media and video producers who want to understand how audio engineers work and collaborate more effectively. Our instructor, Andy, did a great job tailoring the lessons to different skill levels and explaining concepts clearly, so everyone could follow along and learn at their own pace.
Any other thoughts about the training?
I’d like to thank our Master Instructor – Andy and Alex, for their incredible professionalism and patience. They are both very kind and highly knowledgeable in audio production and Pro Tools. They are always willing to answer questions thoroughly and share many useful tips that you will find valuable. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them!
